New Research in Prevention

New research has discovered that an anti-diabetic drug, Metformin, has profound anti- cancer properties. A recent article in the February, 2012 issue of Life Extension Magazine reports a huge study of 8,000 diabetics who were taking this drug. The findings were astounding! A whopping 54 percent reduction in all cancers was noted compared to the general population.

This is incredible since diabetics have higher rates of cancer. The article goes on to say that not only does Metformin help prevent cancer it also provides for a better prognosis in those that have cancer, including the lung, colon and breast. They also make the point that the earlier Metformin was used the greater the protection.

On a side note Metformin produces similar effects as calorie restriction…substantially longer life!

New Findings Regarding Prevention of Breast Cancer Metastasis

A regimen that may prevent the metastasis (spread) of breast cancer following surgical procedures.

Sadly, as we approach Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the National Cancer Institute estimates that in 2011 there will be 230,480 new cases of breast cancer in females and 39,520 females will die of breast cancer.  Removing breast cancer surgically provides the best chances for survival, however, surgery, and possibly biopsy, may disrupt the cancer and cause it to metastasize (spread) to other organs in the body.  Fortunately, science has now found new ways to dramatically reduce the risk of cancer spread—practical things that people can do to reduce their risk.

According to a study published in The British Journal of Cancer in 2002, the over-the-counter heartburn drug Tagamet (cimetidine), has potent anti-cancer and anti-cancer metastasis properties.  The recommended protocol for individuals having surgery is to take 800 mg. per day for a month to reduce the risk of cancer spread.  In addition, no less than five days before surgery, taking 14 grams of Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP) is recommended.  MCP is a modified dietary fiber that prevents cancer cells from sticking together or to blood vessel walls and also boosts immune function.  The power of MCP to prevent cancer spread was documented in a study published by the National Cancer Institute on March 1, 1995.  These protocols may also be considered by people scheduled for biopsies.

Following surgery, there is a significant increase in factors that promote the formation of new blood vessels.  It has been well documented that cancer can’t grow larger than a pin head without the addition of new blood vessels.  There are neutraceuticals—a combination of nutritional and pharmaceutical products—that deter the growth of new blood vessels, i.e., EGCG from green tea, cur cumin, chrysin, soy isoflavones, and silibinin from milk thistle.  Some of these compounds also decrease inflammation, which is known to promote cancer growth and metastasis.  Over-the counter anti-inflammatory drugs, including aspirin, may also reduce inflammation by reducing the COX-2 enzyme in the body.  A 2008 study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology showed an 80% reduction in bone cancer metastasis in breast cancer patients taking a COX-2 inhibitor drug.

One powerful defense against cancer and metastasis is the body’s NK immune cells, which are natural killer cells that specifically attack cancer cells.  Surgery inhibits the activity of NK cells, but there are several supplements that can be taken to increase NK activity, i.e., glutamine, garlic, inositol hexaposphate (IPG), lactoferin, and active hexose correlated compound (AHCC).

It’s exciting that this important information about cancer preparation and recovery is now available.  Please note, however, that these products are not used to prevent, treat, or cure cancer.  It’s amazing how we can support ourselves in times when our health may be threatened.  There is far more information to discuss about fighting cancer than can be included here.  Specific protocols and caveats for all neutraceuticals that may be utilized can be found at www.LEF.org, the Life Extension website.  You will be able to educate and arm yourself against potential illness and complications.  C.
